How different accommodation tendencies manifest in real life situations.
Have you have been in this situation?
You are approaching a street light and are turning left. As you turn there is a car waiting to turn left and you need to go way around them because they pulled out too far into the intersection. A possible better behavior for the other car would be to stop sooner giving you more room to make your turn.
Here’s how Accommodation might manifest in this scenario for the driver of the car that pulled out too far into the intersection:
Low Accommodation
- Behavior: The driver likely focuses on their own needs and intentions, prioritizing their turn and positioning over consideration for others.
- Manifestation:
- They pull into the intersection without much thought for your space or the inconvenience it may cause.
- They may assume that other drivers can and should adjust to their actions, reflecting a tough-minded approach to their driving.
Medium Accommodation
- Behavior: The driver demonstrates a balance between assertiveness and consideration for others.
- Manifestation:
- They might still inch into the intersection to position themselves for their turn but are mindful not to encroach too much.
- While they are aware of your need for space, they are also managing their own turn and timing, striking a middle ground between assertive and considerate behavior.
High Accommodation
- Behavior: The driver is highly considerate of others, often prioritizing their comfort and convenience over their own.
- Manifestation:
- They stop well before the intersection, ensuring ample room for you to make your turn without obstruction, even if it slightly delays their own turn.
- Even if they unintentionally pull too far forward, they might adjust quickly or wave apologetically, showing a high level of awareness and willingness to accommodate.
Summary
- Low Accommodation: The driver prioritizes their own needs and doesn’t consider how their actions affect others.
- Medium Accommodation: The driver balances their needs with consideration for others but may not prioritize giving extra space.
- High Accommodation: The driver goes out of their way to provide space, prioritizing your ease and adjusting their behavior accordingly.
In this situation, a person with the Medium to High Accommodation behavioral tendency would consider stopping sooner to give you room to your turn comfortably.
